What is dose rate, and how is it typically expressed?

Dose rate is the energy deposited per unit mass, expressed as Gy.

Dose rate is dose per unit time, typically expressed as mSv/hour, used to estimate total exposure by multiplying by duration.

Dose rate is how fast the radiation dose accumulates, i.e., the dose delivered per unit time. It’s a rate, not a total amount. In practice we express it as dose per time, such as mSv per hour, because this lets us estimate total exposure by multiplying the rate by the duration of exposure (assuming the rate remains constant). While the fundamental absorbed dose is measured in Gy (energy deposited per mass), the rate version would be Gy per hour; in protection work we typically use Sv-based rates (like mSv/h) to reflect potential biological effect. For example, a dose rate of 2 mSv/h over 3 hours gives about 6 mSv of total dose. The other options describe either the total dose, which is not a rate, or detector counts, which are not dose.

Dose rate is the total dose accumulated over a year, expressed as mSv/year.

Dose rate is the counts per second detected by a detector.
